Every summer The Guitar Foundation of America holds a wonderful convention that brings together classical guitarists throughout the world to perform, teach, learn and celebrate our beautiful instrument. This year it was held at California State University Fullerton. The Guitar Foundation of America or GFA has gained famed over the years for its solo competition, attracting many professional guitarists from the world over on the outset of their careers. Eventually they began to integrate solo competitions for younger guitarists and for the first time this year for ensembles! A perfect opportunity for serious students at CCG!
We think competitions are great if you approach them with the right attitude. The worth of it is in the focused preparation and set goal that the opportunity provides. This year we had two ensembles partake in the ensemble competitions and two guitarists partake in the solo competition. They all worked extremely hard over the past few months polishing up their repertoire and attending extra classes and rehearsals. Their hard-worked paid off! Also a special thanks to our teacher Alexandra Iranfar for her efforts with the ensemble!

"Wait you want to do what?"
After winning 2nd prize the large ensemble decided instead of splitting up the money amongst themselves they wanted to do something a little different. I was nervous at first that they’d want to go blow it on pizza or something a bit juvenile, but to my surprise they had heard about the silent auction the GFA was holding in the evening. They decided they wanted to bid on a portrait of the great composer Francisco Tarrega drawn by the virtuoso guitarist Pepe Romero (who has also had paintings displayed at the Met in NYC). They won the auction! It will be at the school in Santa Clara soon! Check it out below!
